Located on the banks of the Gion River, known for its clear water and looking up at the famous Mt. The brewery is currently headed by Kensuke Shichida, the sixth generation of the brewery, and its series of brands such as “Tenzan” and “Shichida” have won awards at numerous sake competitions and are highly regarded both in Japan and abroad.
What makes this sake brewery even more attractive is the multilayered building that retains its history throughout. The brewing and storage warehouses, built in the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, are full of vintage sake brewing tools, including huge wooden barrels, which are still on display and well preserved today. Even today, the brewery has not stopped expanding. The brewery has steadily increased its production, and while incorporating the latest equipment, it has maintained a strong sense of freshness.
The brewery has been using locally grown sake rice since 1959, and is working with the Tenzan Sake Rice Research Association and other cooperating rice farmers to improve the quality of the sake rice. Currently, about 90% of the sake rice used for brewing is locally grown in Saga Prefecture. Among the sake brewed with various sake rice varieties, the “Shichida” brand series in particular offers a wide variety of flavors. Each one of them is an intense drink with a perfect balance of umami and acidity. The medium-hard brewing water from the Tenzan water system provides a clean yet powerful taste. Kensuke Nanada is always looking ahead to the next generation of sake brewing, actively exploring new flavors that will appeal to younger sake drinkers, such as elegant sparkling sake. Tenzan Brewery contributes to the local community by hosting a variety of annual events. In early summer, visitors can enjoy fireflies dancing in the Gion River that runs in front of the brewery.
